Electromagnetic material feeder for high speed rates

Abstract

New advances in technology to increase the output rate of high speed stamping presses pose new challenges to the used feeding systems. The current techniques are based solely on mechanical roller and gripper feeder, with which the feeding cycles cannot be increased any more. With the development of an electromagnetic feeding system for supplying electrically conductive sheet metals an innovative system to transport the sheet material contactless by electromagnetic forces was developed at the IFUM. The concept is based on the asynchronous linear motor in double stator arrangement with which significantly higher feed forces and dynamics can be achieved. The investigation and optimization of the material feeder were performed both by means of a parameterized finite element (FE) model as well as experimentally. The results show a very good correlation between simulation and measurement results. A feeding force of more than 1000 N can be achieved for sheet metals with a width of about 80 mm with the electromagnetic feeding system. Compared to current mechanical feeders the forces can be more than doubled.
