Tribology in Hot Forging

- Abstract
For tool operating life in the field of bulk metal forming, the concurrence of many factors in the system machine-tool-workpiece is decisive. Hot forging dies are exposed to a combination of cyclic thermal, mechanical, chemical, and tribological loads. The friction and lubrication conditions in metal forming are influenced by a variety of parameters.Accurate friction and wear modeling are necessary for process description and the process design. In addition to different stress types for forging tools, causes of tool failures are described. For the optimization of the tribological conditions, wear protection measures as well as the reduction of thermal stress are exposed.Moreover, for the numerical simulation of the tribological system in hot forming processes, the finite element method is used. Thus correct contact modeling of friction and wear are important. Standard and advanced friction models as well as wear models and their application to industrial processes are represented in this chapter.
