Abstract

In a project at the Institute of Forming Technology and Machines (IFUM) the possibility of monitoring the melting process in an aluminum melting furnace using optical sensors is being investigated. The purpose is to monitor the melting zone by meant applying of optical systems in order to be able to align the firing device specifically and to detect remaining material in the firing zone. By of this method the intermittent opening of the furnace door, which was previously used for this purpose but leads to high energy losses, is to be reduced largely.
